On November 13, 2024, the humble yet vibrant barangay of Bita-og Gaja in New Lucena, Iloilo, became a cradle of innovation and inspiration. The Entrepreneurship Development Seminar, organized for the newly formed Bita-og Gaja Women Association (BIGWA), transformed an ordinary Wednesday into a launching pad for entrepreneurial aspirations.

Despite an initial target of 15 participants, 22 eager attendees filled the venue, embodying the spirit of curiosity and community. The seminar, facilitated by the dynamic Ms. Angela Betita and graced by the resourceful Junior Business Counselor from DTI-New Lucena, Ms. Joella Opina, proved to be a masterclass in turning aspirations into actionable strategies.

Ms. Opina started with the basics, defining entrepreneurship as the ability to transform an idea into a business, innovate production methods, and improve management techniques. Her approachable style made complex concepts accessible, resonating with the participants’ aspirations.

The discussion introduced three vital clusters essential for entrepreneurial success:

  1. Achievement Cluster – Emphasizing the importance of opportunity-seeking, persistence, and commitment.
  2. Planning Cluster – Highlighting the value of clear goal-setting, systematic planning, and constant information-seeking.
  3. Power Cluster – Empowering participants with the skills of persuasion, networking, and confidence.

Participants were also guided through the anatomy of a business plan, delving into executive summaries, marketing strategies, production and organizational planning, and financial projections.

A hands-on workshop challenged participants to explore business opportunities within their community, leveraging their unique skills, knowledge, and passions. Divided into three groups, the participants brainstormed, strategized, and presented their business ideas tailored to their market’s needs. The energy in the room was palpable, as each group proudly showcased their creative and practical solutions.

To ensure the learning experience was as engaging as it was educational, Ms. Opina led an invigorating icebreaker, reminding everyone that laughter and camaraderie are vital ingredients in any successful endeavor.

As the day drew to a close, participants shared heartfelt reflections on the seminar’s impact. Many expressed newfound clarity on entrepreneurship’s core principles, from opportunity recognition to risk-taking and innovation. Others celebrated the realization that entrepreneurs play a pivotal role in driving economic growth, fostering local development, and inspiring communities.

The gratitude towards SEA and DTI-New Lucena was unanimous, as participants recognized the seminar as a life-changing opportunity to transform their ambitions into sustainable ventures.

This seminar was more than just a one-day event; it was a testament to the power of empowerment and education in unlocking potential. BIGWA’s journey has only just begun, but with the tools, insights, and motivation gained, these women are poised to create businesses that not only sustain their families but uplift their community.
