As we go through with our daily lives we’ve observed about how our environment has been adversely changing not just because of natural causes but because of human doings. For the last few years we have seen a lot of disastrous catastrophes around the world that resulted to thousands of deaths and left a huge scar on Mother Nature. We’ve grown to understand that we have to act to save our environment because the climate is changing – but that is not the case anymore. We are now in the time where the changes in our climate is alarming already. Thus, in the pursuit for Environmental Governance, Solution Ecosystems Activator, Inc. gathered young individuals from their partner schools to be informed and understand that it is not Climate Change anymore – that it is Climate Emergency now.
The forum on Climate Emergency was held last February 3, 2020 at Lifebank Academy with more or less a hundred participants from elementary, high school and college students from the partner schools of SEA, Inc. (Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College, Culasi National High, Pedada Elementary School, Punta Buri Elementary School, Balud II Elementary School and Rombang Elementary School) including several of their teachers. Young advocates from Calinog Comprehensive High School and the Sanguniang Kabataan (SK) officials of Brgy. Legayada, Lambunao, Iloilo were also present as well as the sister program of SEA, Inc. that advocates Sustainable Agriculture, Ecosystem of Stakeholders for Sustainable Agriculture (ESSA). The talk on Climate Emergency was given by SEA, Inc.’s Executive Director, Nicanor Perlas, who is a strong advocate for protecting and saving the environment and who has given over hundred talks in different parts of the Philippines and the world on climate crisis. The forum ended with a challenge to all attendees on what they would do after hearing that we’re in the middle of the sixth extinction which is due to human activities. After the activity, conversations among the attendees opened to the idea to spread the awareness on Climate Emergency to their communities and network. We are the ones who caused our sufferings, thus it is just right that we are also the ones to correct it.
