On November 12, 2024, in Barangay Jelicuon Este, New Lucena, Iloilo, a diverse group of 30 participants gathered for a day of learning, sharing, and reflection on responsible parenthood.

As one participant aptly put it, “Parenting is like farming – it requires patience, care, and a lot of nurturing to grow good results.” It was a reminder that, just as crops need time and attention, so do the relationships and children we nurture.

The Setting of the Stage: A Strong Foundation The session opened with Ms. Angela Betita facilitating the introductions, followed by an opening prayer by Kagawad Mary Grace Jerusalem and a warm welcome from Punong Barangay Hon. John Dennis Solas. He set the tone by emphasizing that “Strong spirituality within the family is the bedrock of peace and stability in our homes.” He also expressed his gratitude for the program, recognizing its value not only for young couples but for all partners striving to build healthier families.

Understanding the Core of Parenthood Ms. Angela Betita shared the objectives of the orientation to deepen the understanding of parental responsibilities, discover available government programs for family development, and most importantly, underscore the significance of responsible parenthood. She then introduced the resource person, Ms. Simar P. Simora, from the Provincial Population Office, who expertly guided the participants through the essentials of responsible parenting.

Marriage: The Cornerstone of Family Ms. Simora began by discussing the importance of marriage as defined by the New Family Code of the Philippines. She quoted “Marriage is a special contract, not just between two individuals, but a union that affects the entire family.” She explored the legal and emotional foundations that contribute to a lasting marriage, urging participants to remember the importance of mutual understanding, love, respect, and financial stability. As one participant shared, “It’s not just about the wedding day – it’s about the everyday commitment we make to each other and our children.”

The Many Hats of Responsible Parenthood The orientation then delved into the various duties of parents: from providing physical care and instilling discipline to nurturing education and promoting values formation. As Ms. Simora explained, “Responsible parenthood isn’t just about providing for your children’s needs; it’s about preparing them to be responsible citizens.” She encouraged parents to maintain open lines of communication, noting that “Without open conversation, we risk losing the connection with our children, especially in this digital age.”

Facing Parenting Challenges Participants reflected on their own experiences with raising children in the age of social media. One participant admitted, “It’s tough when my child spends more time on their phone than with the family. But I’m learning to set boundaries and have conversations about what’s appropriate.” Others shared their own struggles and triumphs, reinforcing the message that responsible parenthood requires constant learning and adapting.

Ms. Simora’s advice resonated with everyone: “As parents, we must be guides, not just providers. We need to be role models of discipline, kindness, and patience.”

A Commitment to Strengthening Families The resource person also encouraged the participants to gather young couples in their barangay for marriage counseling, particularly to help those entering early marriages. She urged everyone to “Be the example your children and neighbors need – it’s not just about managing your family, but about nurturing a community of responsible individuals.”

Closing Thoughts: Striving for Growth In closing, the participants expressed their gratitude. One father shared, “I may not have all the answers, but I know I’m trying. This orientation reminded me that parenting is a journey of constant learning.”

The final message from Ms. Simora summed it all up: “Parenting is a lifelong responsibility. But with the right tools, a strong partnership, and an open heart, every family can thrive.”

The day’s takeaways? Responsible parenthood isn’t just about fulfilling basic duties, it’s about nurturing love, respect, and understanding within the family – values that will shape the next generation.
